Simple Snack: Potato Crisps

Have you ever wanted to eat potato chips but don’t want to pay for air or just can’t make it to the store to get some? My little sister loves potato chips and eats them all the time. Growing up we didn’t get to buy them very often, so my sister and I decided that we were going to try and make them ourselves.

We figured it was probably simple. So, we started to test different ways of cutting, seasoning, and cooking them. After trying quite a few different ways we decided on a way that we liked the most. It ended up being even easier than either of us thought it was going to be.

The recipe was only three ingredients, and only took about 20 minutes to make depending on how quickly you prep the potatoes. The three ingredients were,

1 Potato sliced thin
1/4 cup oil
1/2 tsp salt

To start pre-heat your oven to 400, then you want to make sure your potato is very clean, we always scrubbed it really well with a dish scratcher that was just for potatoes. Now I use a little brush that is for cleaning vegetables. However, you can use whatever you use to clean your potatoes for baking. You can also peel your potato. I like to leave the skin on because that is where most of the nutrients are.

After your potato is clean, you want to slice it really thin, I do this using a vegetable peeler, but you can use a mandoline or a knife. Once you have the potato cut thin, you can either dip each piece individually into oil or you can just pour the oil over all of them and toss them to make sure the oil coats them. You then lay them out on a rimmed baking sheet and sprinkle the salt over them.

Once your oven is up to temp, place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes. When they first come out of the oven, they may still be soft and seem like they are not done. But once the oil on them cools they will crisp up and become like chips.

This recipe was created by my sister and I in order to give us something similar to our favorite snack. But in the end, it became one of our new favorite snacks and I personally actually prefer these over store-bought potato chips. My sister still loves her potato chips but is always willing to eat these crisps when I make them.
